Setting For "Number the Stars"
The first setting of this book is in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1943. During this time period, World War II had just begun. The second setting of this book takes place at Uncle Henrik's house in Gilleje He has a beautiful little cottage on the bay, where Annemarie and Ellen can look out at the bay and see Sweden, which at this point is a free country. Because his cottage is so close to Sweden, it is a great place for Jews to escape. It is still 1943, and Denmark is in the midst World War II.
Comparing and Contrasting Annemarie and Ellen For our second project we are going to compare Annemarie and Ellen. To start off, Annemarie and Ellen are best friends, and spend most of their time together. Ellen is Jewish, but Annemarie isn't. Though that is a big difference in their lives, they find a way to look past it by spending time together when Ellen is not at the synagogue or practicing her religion of Judaism. Annemarie is also a faster runner, than Ellen. An example of that, is when they were racing down the street before they get stopped by the soldiers, Annemarie won the race. Ellen is also much more shy than Annemarie is. For an example, is when the soldiers stopped them on the street when they were running, Ellen stayed behind, being the shy girl she is, and didn't talk. These are the similarities and differences between Annemarie and Ellen.
ThemeThe theme of this book is that even in if you think you don't have any bravery, it will show when you least expect it.This is proven in the story when Annemarie doubts that she would have as much bravery as Peter, and be able to die for her friends. Her bravery shows when she gets stopped in the woods by the German soldiers in the woods and has enough bravery to be able to act like nothing was going on and she was just a innocent little girl! She also had alot of bravery to be able to risk her life for her freinds by running through the woods to ge to the harbor. She had doubted herself about that throughout the book, but in the end, she realized that she does have enough bravery and strength! :-)
Plot Line for Number the StarsExposition Backround- The exposition background of this book is in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1943 when the Nazi's are taking away the Jews. Another Exposition background is at Uncle Henrik's house in Gilleje which is across the shore from Sweden.Initiating Incident- The intitiang Incident of this book is when the soldiers came to check the Johansens house in the middle of the night. Annemarie and Ellen were in their bed listening, when the soldiers came and took them out of bed.Rising Action-1- Mama, Kirsti, Annemarie, and Ellen get stopped on the train to Uncle Henrik's house and are questioned if it is their New Year because it was really the Jews New Year. They made sure that Kirsti didn't say anything because she probably would of blurted out, and told them that it was Ellen's their Jewish friends New Year.2- The second conflict was when they had a fake funeral for fake Great Aunt Birtie who never existed. They stuffed the coffin with coats and blankets for the Jews they were helping escape. 3- The third conflict was when Annemarie realized that the package that was supposed to be given to Uncle Henrik was sitting on the front porch. She told her mother and she then had to run through the woods to give it to Uncle Henrik before he left.Climax- The climax of this story was when Annemarie got stopped in the woods on her way to Uncle Henrik's boat. The Germans gave the bread to their dogs and to out the package that was cleverly hid by Uncle Henrik's "lunch." They ripped open the package and let their dogs sniff what was inside. A handkerchief. That handkerchief actually ruined the dogs smell so they couldn't smell any people on the fishermen boats.Falling Action- The falling action of this book was when the Rosens got over to Sweden safely and fast. They were now free.
Darkness Over DenmarkReading Synopses For Darkness Over Denmark
Nov.8, pgs. 1-20 ~ On April 9th 1940, planes flew over Copenhagen, Denmark dropping papers saying that the Germans were were occupying Denmark to "protect them from the war", but everyone knew this was not going to turn out good. They also promised to respect their Political Independence. After a while the people of Denmark get used to the soldiers standing on the corners of the streets, and weren't afraid of them anymore. Denmark decided to accept their terms and not fight, but after a while, the Germans started making laws against Jews, and started getting stricter. Jews eventually couldn't have certain jobs or go in certain places. Next there was a shortage of food, gas, coal, yarn, coffee, and more. The Danes had to use other resources for these needs.
Nov.9, pgs. 20-40 ~ From April 1940 to August of 1943 the government of Denmark was forced to accept German demands. Hitler was now in control. People in government were arrested because they were political enemies of the Nazi's. Some of them were Jews, but it didn't matter. It was obvious now that Denmark was was losing it's Political Independence even though the Germans promised the would respect it. Next the Danes started a secret newspapers, or pamphlets were started. They talked about anything from what the German's were doing, to protests in the streets. That is pretty much what I read today in Darkness Over Denmark.
Nov.10, pgs. 40-64 ~ Ch. 5- 1. The resistance got guns by stealing them from the Nazi's at restaurants, making them by their selves, getting them from relatives, or buying them from supporters of the resistance. 2.Leif Vido, andTage Seest were two of the outstanding individuals who helped the resistance get guns.
Ch. 6- 1. Borge and Dora Thing- This couple resisted the Nazi's because Borge got arrested for blowing up German buildings, but in the end he ended up escaping prison and the Nazi's didn't find him. Jorgen Kieler-This man was feeling left out because everyone else was doing the bombing, so he and his friend collected two bombs and set them off. The next day they went back to see what their bombs had done, and it turned out that they set off the bombs on a steel bridge which hadn't done anything. They felt a little better than you would think because they also caused a distraction so someone else could bomb the germans factory.
Nov.11, pgs. 64-92 ~ Ch.7- 1. His final solution wasHitler'splan to killl all of Europe's jews. 2.Best managed to keep all the Jews in Denmark because rumors had spread about Hitler's "Final Solution," so one day Denmark's bishop asked Best if all the rumors were true and he said no, so the bishop insured Denmark that they were all safe, so no one left. 3.Georg F. Duckwitz was a man who worked for the german shipping operarions, and also for Best. When Best told him that they were planning an attack on the Danes Jews, he knew he had to act quickly. He got to Denmark as fast as he could and told the head of the resistance and the Jewish Community that the attack was coming. Duckwitz's actions saved alot of Jews. Ch.8- 1. Ebba Lund helped hundreds of Jews get out of the country to Sweden by raising money and then hiring fisherman to take them over. Eventually they had a dozen fisherman who had agreed to help and saved hundreds of Jews while they were at it. 2. Neils Bohr was a nuclear physicist who instead of flying to London flew to Sweden to ask the Swedish King if he would provide a safe haven for the jews. They accepted and radio brodcasted that all jews were acceoted in Sweden. Then Bohr eventually flew to London. 3. Yes. They way Brent Bogratschew escaped to Sweden does remind me of the way they escaped in Number the Stars because they both escaped in boats and both were hidden in the hold of the ships.
Nov.12, pgs. 92-117 ~ Ch.9- 1. One of the scenes of capture in this chapter was when the Nazi's went to the Jewish old-age home net to the synagogue. First a few soldiers came on foot, but then, minutes later, big trucks with attack dogs, entered the scene. The elders were arrested, and some dragged to the synagogue if they couldn't get up. The Nazi's stole valuables from their rooms, and from the synagogue. 2. Salo Wassermann was a boy living in his summer house when his parents told him about the situation. His mother had heard that jews were coming to their town to get taken to Sweden. Mrs. Wassermann asked if they could go too, so instead of leaving from their town, ( where they were known well ) they went up the coast to a friend's house to depart. Shortly after their arrival, they realized that their friends lived right next to HITLER! They quickly went back to their summer house and arranged other plans to depart in a different nearby town. They night they were to leave Mr. Wassermann decided he couldn't just leave his job which was back in Copenhagen, so he was to go to Sweden the next day by himself. That night they just barely made it on to the boat. Salo was the last one to jump on. THeir boat moved quickly across the sound, and arrived in Sweden in about and hour. After a couple days Mr. Wassermann had come over. Eventually they found out that he had drowned trying to get away from the Nazi's. Ch.10- 1. It's purpose was to coordinate the work of the different resistance groups to fight the Germans in every possible way. Their goal was to bring independence back to Denmark. 2. The round-up of the jews effected the other Danes because the Freedom Council stated that... "Every Dane who renders help to the Germans in their persecution of human beings is a traitor and will be punished as such when Germany is defeated," In others words, if you didn't help the jews escaped, you were going to be hated, and punished when the war is over and we have beat Germany. 3. HD2 was a resistance group that had 2 members. They were a group that blew up factories and shops that provided food, weapons, and shelter to the Germans. The leaders were "john" and Jorgen. Recently after the bombings john was shot and arrested. Jorgen took in new members like his siblings and friends. Later in the war, he and his brother Flemming were betrayed. Jorgen was shot and taken prisoner. They rest of his family were captives too, except for his mother and sister. He was later sent to a concentration camp. 4. In the summer and spring of 1944 the city of Denmark was full of bombings and resistance groups. The Nazi's in Denmark were getting harsher, tougher, and stricter. 5. Bobs Peschcke-Koedt was a professional photographer who took pictures of the Danes for their fake ID's so they could get across to Sweden safely. 6. The bombing of the Shell House was a big deal because all the resistance information was burned and then the Nazi's couldn't access their files anymore.
Nov.13, pgs.177- 138 ~ Ch.11-1. It was called that because these transports were death caravans to Auschwitz, where most of the prisoners were gassed upon their arrival.2. In Theresienstadt there were so many diseases and sicknesses. Examples: Epidemics of diphtheria, Scarlet Fever, and typhus3. The Nazi's tricked the Red Cross by renovating the Concentration Camp before the they came to it. A band greeted them and the hostages were feed well just for that day. Obviously this is not what it was normally like.4. The conditions in the camp were disgusting. The beds were made out of straw, and at night the bugs would come out and bite. The prisoners got barely any food and were treated like animals. There was hunger, cold, disease, humiliation, fear, and death.Ch.12-1. The Danish Brigade was a volunteer army, with about 750 Jews in it who had escaped from Denmark and were now free in Sweden which was where the Danish Brigade was located.2. The Bernadotte action was when thousands of prisoners were released from German concentration camps before the end of the war and brought to Sweden. Th Red Cross negotiated with the germans for prisoner release.3. Dr.Holm was very clever. He filled his van with beer and Danish delicacies. Then he went over to the Gestapo Headquarters and gave them all the food. After many hours of drinking he convinced a officer to sign a paper. Since the officer had drunk to much he didn't realize what he was signing. It was actually a contract to let all the prisoners go.Nov.14, pgs.138-145 ~ Ch.13-1. After the surrender of the germans the streets of Denmark were crowded with people laughing, crying, shouting, and singing. Some positive things were that everyone was happy and grateful. Some negative things were that Danes coming back from Sweden had to find new homes and pay new rent.2. The official action of the surrender was when the soldiers from Germany walked out of the country, looking tired and defeated.3. When the Danish-Jews came back they found that now their old houses were newly painted, and had fresh flowers around it. They came back to find a regular city in one of it's happiest times. the end.THE END!
